inMateriis S.A. de C.V. is an additive manufacturing laboratory in Guadalajara, Mexico. We provide solutions, develop materials and promote science and technology.

Mision

To establish a materials science laboratory  in order to develop new technology, knowledge and intellectual property in Mexico through four main activities:

    • Consulting in additive manufacturing (3D printing) for all industry sectors.
    • To promote science and technology to the general public.
    • To establish an environment where talented people can interact.
    • To develop a space where young scientists can share and expand their knowledge.

Describe the project(s) in which you work:

Right now, I am working in the design of furniture of social interest houses. This project  is meant to offer, people who are going to buy houses with INFONAVIT credit, smart furnishing options designed specifically for those houses. The purpose of this project is for people to have the option of buying accessible priced furnishing, which are the adequate size for their homes and also have multiple functions to better utilize the space.

As of right now, I am helping with the first stage of the furnish design. To do this, I have made an analysis of the existing products and an analysis of the houses we are designing for. What I am doing now, is proposing furniture design ideas and concepts for the houses. For the set of furniture I am proposing, I am creating them into 3D CAD models to later on also 3D print them.

In the Universidad de Guadalajara: a PhD in Chemical Engineering Science (polymers/ materials science)

Describe the project(s) in which you work:

I work in synthesis and polymer characterization: nanoparticles, compound materials, foams,  membranes and hydrogels. This work is in  field of material science (polymers); this has a use for medical applications, 3D printing filament and creation of compound materials (composites) to the plastic industry. For this project, I suggest systems that give an alternative solution for problems such as raw materials for bone prosthesis, panels for the construction industry and food preservation systems. I have experience with chemical synthesis, polymer processing, and compound materials (extrusion, injection, rotational moulding and thermo compression), as well as various techniques for characterization (spectroscopic, morphological analysis and thermic) directed to optimize the mechanical properties (flexion, tension and impact).

What did you study? And, where?

I studied Biomedical Engineering in the Universidad de Monterrey with specialization in Medical Instrumentation from the Universidad Iberoamericana. I also have a masters in Nanotechnology and Regenerative Medicine from the University College London.

Describe the project(s) in which you work:

Through my masters I worked in the manufacturing, characterization and biocompatibility  trials from a nanocomposite used to regenerate cartilage using 3D printers and adult stem cells with the purpose of creating a trachea for children.

Currently, in inMateriis, I am part of the team that works in the development and manufacturing of 3D biocomposite with bacterial cellulose. Specifically, I focus in the development of the protocol for its manufacturing using 3D printers. We do this by researching the best way to incorporate these two materials: the polymer (the component found at a higher percentage) and the “filler”, which is the cellulose; this one mixed in small quantities, generally less than 5%.

2013-2017: Biomedical Engineering from the Centro Universitario de Ciencias Exactas e Ingeniería (University Centre of Exact Science and Engineering) from the Universidad de Guadalajara.

Describe the project(s) in which you work:

Currently, I am part of the Biomedical engineering team in the area of segmentation, modeling and software mechanical trials.

As a member of the project “Desarrollo de estructuras tridimensionales y mezclas de resinas para la manufactura aditiva de implantes óseos” (Development of three-dimensional structures and resin mixtures for the additive manufacturing of bone implants), my job consists of generating and implementing methods for the analysis of finite element in the design of the implant.

Simultaneously, I collaborate in the project of segmentation, design and printing for the cardiac system, for its research and analysis applied in simulated surgeries. I am in charge of segmenting and modeling based on the medical images.

Gabriela Alejandra Ornelas Corona

What did you study? And, where?

I studied Design for the Graphic Communication in the Universidad de Guadalajara, at the Centro de Arte, Arquitectura y Diseño (Center of Art, Architecture and Design). I am certified in 3D animation through a course of Designer UX, a course in basic Blender, amongst other.

Describe the project(s) in which you work:

Currently, I am working in the social media of inMateriis; looking through the web for interesting and powerful material that may catch the interest of the users. In the near future, I will be collaborating with inMateriis’ web page programmer in order to keep a wide range of published content. At the same time, I am specializing in the design of 3D CAD models, whether this is for animation or printing, in the Zbrush and Maya 2016 programs. In order to be useful when asked to create 3D pieces designed by the users.

Through inMateriis I have discovered a passion for 3D printing and the development of materials; updating my knowledge in the tools used for this purpose such as: Meshmixer, Maya, Blender, amongst other. In the future, I see myself: professionally creating 3D models for printing, collaborating with the 3D printing process, managing the machines with a great deal of confidence and producing the craziest designs.

I studied Chemical Engineering in the Universidad de Guadalajara. I’m currently about to finish a Masters in Forest Products and Biotechnology, at the same university.

Describe el proyecto(s) en el que trabajas:

At inMateriis, I have been working primarily in the lab area; mainly in hydroxyapatite synthesis, to create a bone graft substitute. Though, I have also been helping in the creation of cellulose compound—a resin to take advantage of the alternative nutrient sources. I also work in the formation of materials or substances in relation to the creation of compound or synthesis. I consider myself a pretty shy person, but with a great ability to learn things quickly and always open to help out those that need it. Amongst my hobbies I enjoy listening to music, playing videogames, the buying and selling of said games (only for fun, as I find this to be sometimes even more entertaining than playing) and going out on long walks.

ERIC MORENO ÁVILA

Describe the project(s) in which you work:

At inMateriis, I have been working on the optimization of synthetic hydroxyapatite synthesis (HAP) to increase the yield of the material obtained by means of process adaptations. Also helping in the management, control, preventive or corrective maintenance of 3D printers and the different types of materials in which can be printed. Once the piece is printed, I also check that it has been printed correctly, if not, evaluate its reprint or if it is apt to apply a corrective process and avoid the extra expense of material. I also work in the installation, maintenance of material, equipment and furniture of the chemistry laboratory, as well as in other areas where this would be required.

Chemical Engineering and Forest Products Science Teacher in the Universidad de Guadalajara. At the moment, I am working my way to a PhD in Biotechnology Processing Science.

Describe el proyecto(s) en el que trabajas:

I have collaborated with iMateriis since december 2014, when I was in charge of the design and montage of the lab for hydroxyapatite synthesis and photopolymerizable resin for 3D printing.

As of now, I carry out part of the experimental work for my thesis in the company through the collaboration project with the UdeG “Manufactura aditiva y aplicación biomédica de celulosa bacteriana obtenida con nutrientes alternos” (Additive Manufacturing and biomedical application of bacterial cellulose obtained from alternate nutrients); I co-direct with Ines Jimenez, with which inMateriis implements the biotechnology area. This investigation focuses in the production of cellulose polymer through a bacteria, using as a growth medium, pulp from the fruit in the region; whose overproduction is identified as a production problem of agri food waste. We mean to use the bacterial cellulose as raw matter for the 3D printing of biomaterial through the use of a technique known as stereolithography; directed for medical applications on implants, reinforcements and scaffoldings for the tissue regeneration of bones, cartilage, ligaments, amongst others.
